The return of Dandy Warhols...

My only other experience of this band's unique sound was in episode 12 of the first season of The O.C, kicked off by the Dandies' 'We Used to be Friends'. This was an interesting introduction, however, I didn't instantly rush out and buy their previous four albums to complement my record collection. Yet the single does now sit happily on my iPod.

Now the Dandy Warhols are preparing to release their epic fifth album, 'Odditorium or Warlords of Mars', out on September 15th.

The album is at least partially named after their infamous Portland studio headquarters, it sees the band venturing beyond the synthesised pop of 2003's 'Welcome to the Monkey House', but still having time to revisit their stripped-down style of earlier years.

The CD is a mix of smooth rock hooks, sonic experimentation, rock, electronic pop, country blues, and deep psychedelia. Along with a tongue-in-cheek intro from A&E host Bill Kurtis, thrown in for good measure - just like 'Warlords of Mars'.

The album was co-produced by lead vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and long time band collaborator Gregg Williams, and mixed by Courtney and Tchad Blake (Elvis Costello, and Latin Playboys).

My favourite track from the album is 'Down like Disco', however, the biggest success of the album will probably be 'Smoke it' as this is classic Dandies.

The Dandies are going to follow up this release with their only live performance of the summer at Lollapalooza, to be held in Chicago's Grant Park on July 23rd and 24th.
