Fountains of Wayne- 'Hey Julie'

Coming from the band that brought us the spunk pop hit 'Stacey's Mum', 'Hey Julie' is another typically tongue-in-cheek slice of pop pie from 'Fountains of Wayne'. 'Hey Julie' is a tale about the thankless pursuit of the nine-to-five grind: "Working all day for a mean little man/ With a clip on tie and a rub on tan", and how "his Julie" (we don't know if their Julie is any relations to Ali G's) provides the light at the end of the tunnel in yet another infectiously catchy hooked chorus: "I'd never make it through without you".
With maracas, acoustic guitar and harmonica providing a simple but effective accompaniment, the inspired lyrics are allowed to come to the fore, taking pride of place in a similar way to how Stacey's Mum recently got in going on in the centre of an infamous top-shelf magazine.

Fountains of Wayne have risen above the grime of pathetic punk pop that has recently been polluting the airwaves and have produced a pleasingly simple piece of pop pleasure.
