Marianne Talks Exclusively to The Raft
Martyn Griffiths: Can't wait for the Barbican concert-what can we expect??
Marianne: WEll, as it's advertised it is Marianne Faithfull with a completely new band. With special guests, who are Pulp, as in Jarvis and the boys, and this great guitar genius who is a great friend of mine and who I have worked with before, Bill Frisell, he's one of the greatest guitarists in the world, so I am very lucky. The focus will be on Kissing Time but that is not to say that I wont do any of my old stuff. I can tell you that as a treat that Pulp would like to do Guilt with me. With Billy, he did all the wonderful guitar on Strange Weather, there's no one like him, he's unique.
Chris: Marianne - do you know if the songs you recorded for the Ab Fab tv series will ever be released for us fans?
Marianne: I'm afraid I don't think so, they're not for me, they're for Ab Fab. Maybe in time Jennifer Saunders & Dawn French will approach my manager Francois and maybe make a deal involving alot of money, and so on and so forth and that will be the only way that they will be released. Sorry about that guys but C'est comme ca.
Sari: Do you have any other theatre productions coming up? I enjoyed the Brecht/Weill production immensely!
Marianne: I think of all my performance as theatre in a way but technically no. My next performances will be of my own work, my own songs. I am really what I am, which is a pop singer. I loved doing the Brecht/Weill work and learnt alot from it. It was very 20th Century, we are now in the 21st, a new time and I have moved on.
Sari: Do you have any songs ready for the next album already? There must be stuff that was left out from Kissing Time...
Marianne: No.
Chris: Will you be touring the UK this year to promote the new album?
Marianne: I start my big tour of the world, including the UK and I am looking forward to it very very much. We start in September of this year. There is one performance on teh 10th March at The Barbican Theatre. For the fans and also for me to find out how the new material plays and check it all out.
Penny: Do you have any plans to move back to live in Britain or are you still happy in Ireland?
Marianne: I have no plans to ever live in Britain again. I am happy in Eire.
Shadrack: You've always been very erudite and a lover of literature ..... which contemporary writers do you like the most?
Marianne: I really like Will Self and his writing and I like Salman Rushdie and I'm sure that there are alot of other things that I like but I havent got time at the moment!
Serge: Who did you perform "Song for Nico" with at the Warhol Exhibition opening ? Did you get a positive response from John Cale ? Thanks for keeping Nico's memory alive.
Marianne: I was meant to do it with Dave Stewart, but he cancelled at the last moment. I was very lucky to find an excellent and charming session guitarist who leart Song For Nico in a flash and played it beautifully, there was not a dry eye in the house and obviously John Cale and Brian Eno both loved song for Nico and I really loved their performance too.
Hans: Just listened online to Sex With Strangers. Why is there so much techno stuff on it? I just love all your music. Why this?
Marianne: Why not.
Serge: What's the lineup of the new band ?
Marianne: Drums, Bass, Guitar and techno wizard Keyboard.
Robert: Has Beck written the song "Like Being Born"? Did he play any instruments on this one?
Marianne: Beck wrote the tune and he did play but it was what I call 'real music', drums, bass, two guitars, played in real time. With yes, a little bit of Beck's special stardust.
