Get the lowdown on the Audio Bullys!
Let's talk about the new album - what stage are you at? We're coming along with it. We were always doing bits and bobs when we weren't touring anyway, and when we had a little bit of time, but we've started to slow down. We've only got a couple more club dates to do and festival dates and then we're not going to do anything for a long time. We've got the V festival coming up, Creamfields, that Sanky's birthday thing in Manchester and a gig in Holland. That's pretty much it; anything good we've been offered we've taken, but now it's time to just concentrate on the album. Before we made the first album we never played anywhere, we had all the time in the world to do it, and now we've realised that unless we totally stop playing live right now we'll never have enough time to really get into our zone with the new album.
Is it a help or a hinderance to be playing live while you're doing the album? It can be a help, but travelling and hectic nights out can get you out of the rhythm of making stuff. But it helps from the point of view of giving you ideas and helping you know what might work on a crowd.
Do you always write with the live production in mind and how it's going to translate onto your album? Yeah, I suppose so. We were always coming from a club angle, always trying to make stuff that would work a crowd well.
Do you feel much pressure to compete with the success of the first album? You know you've got to deliver something as good or better if you're progressing, so there's a little pressure, but I won't let it worry me. You've just got to embrace it and rise to the challenge.
Can you tell us a few things we can expect from the new album? Just a more progressive sound, a more experienced Audiobullys. There's a lot of what you got from the last album: big grooves, big beats, basslines and housey stuff, some hip hop. It's still original material, with that Audiobullys edge to it. We still vary the styles a lot, it just seems to be the way we end up working, but it's a bit more grown up. We've seen more in the last couple of years than in a lifetime!
Have you been writing about your experiences over this last year? I think I have, I've still got more to do and I need to get my head into gear.
Any specific tracks on the new album we can tell people about? There's one we've just done, it reminds me a little bit of the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy with a lot of housey break beats but with a real classic feel. I think it would work really well at festivals. I'm not sure what we're calling it yet, but for now we're calling it 'Dirty'. Then there's another one called 'Getting Myself On Track' which is really good, and a track called 'The World'. I'm excited about the new songs, we've tested them out at festivals and they've gone down well. |
