Macy Gray Talks About her Track on the Olympics Album...
Macy Gray
Could you tell us about the track 'Oh Yeah' It was recorded in LA, it's a feel good song, how the Olympics is all about success and triumph, how you can be successful by feeling happy, by feeling good about yourself.
Were you inspired by any particular Olympic event? It was pretty general, but I love watching the track events and gymnastics, swimming, diving, I love diving.
If the track was going to be an Olympic event, what would it be? It would be like speed diving
. Actually I don't know, I think you'd probably have to make up another event for that song!
How did you get involved in the Unity project? The record company, EMI, called and told us about it, we were definitely interested, it's definitely important- the Olympics are really important, it's kind of something you cannot really say no to.
Do you feel that we have moved on at all in the last four years in terms of peace and unity? No, we've done a terrible job. I think we have a long way to go on that front, but hopefully we'll get there eventually.
What was your first impression when you heard Keziahs part on the record? It was great, it was really great. I was sort of just being introduced to him and his music and what he's all about, so it's cool to do a song with him.
How does it compare to doing a track on your own, to doing a duet? When you're doing your own albums, you know what you're doing, when you write a song for something or someone else, it's more of a challenge, because you have to understand what that's all about and then try to write something to it. It's a lot more challenging to write for other events and other people.
Can you remember the first time you heard the finished track and what was going through your head? (Macy co-wrote with Mike Elizondo) I thought it was cool. Mike Elizondo proofs it and he worked really hard on it, I was kind of surprised of the direction that it went in to, but I think it's great.
What was your favourite event in school? Volleyball. I used to play volleyball; I was a very good spiker.
How about now, what do you do to keep fit? Eat and sleep! No just kidding, I can't actually say on television, I should keep it a secret.
You're performing tonight, how's it going to go? Incredible. You've never seen anything like it, it's going to be a once in a lifetime thing, you go to be there!!
