NSM Makes Our Days!
What have you been up to besides recording the new album?
I've been doing my club night called The Co-op and we're about four years deep now. It takes place in East London and people can expect hardcore broken beat when they come to this night. We don't strictly play that but if you want that kind of thing, then come to the Co-op. It's on every other Sunday of the month and on the night I DJ with Dego from 4Hero and another guy called Demus from the group 2 Banks 4. We rotate with other DJ's sometimes.
There's that and I have also been working on the production side of things. I'm currently working with a guy called Pino Palladino - he was the bass player on the D'Angelo album "Voodoo". He's also worked on Common's last album "Electric Circus" and on the Roy Hargrove project. I got introduced to him (Pino) and we started to have lots of jam sessions and just clicked from there.
"Turn It Up" is the titled of your new album, is that an indication that your taking the NSM sound in a new musical direction?
It's very different and a lot of people said to me that's its very focused. I'm not sure if I agree with that but it's definitely reaching out to more people than last time. Last time it was a case of different people working round me. The staff at my label Virgin were all different back then and there was a different dynamic. I feel I have progressed and moved on with the music.
Yeah definitely, the album seems more polished now and it has more of an order, unlike the last one which was more of an eclectic mix of songs.
There is more of a direction as the last album was a bit more noodly. It was just about making interesting music and getting some hype surrounding the New Sector Movements.
Were you more conscious of who would be listening when you wrote this album?
On this album I was definitely more conscious of who I would be reaching. On the last album, I just though Yeah whatever!
Would it be fair to say that it was made more for yourself last time?
I dont think it was more for me. Theres an audience out there for the music NSM have done in the past but this album was more focused on trying to get to the next level as a producer. Hopefully with this new music, Im showing the level that I am at now and where Im going as a producer.
I can hear that in the sound of your new stuff. How much progression have you made as a producer?
Where I am as producer now is a lot further than the album is. It is progressing all the time as I continue to record all the time.
