Melissa Auf De Maur: a firm favourite with the rock fraternity!
J: How do like England?
M: Good, Ive been here so many times in my life, you know Ive been here more than any other country, so its very comfortable.
J: What about the UK Tour?
M: Oh, very good. Weve been through the Latin countries, then Germany , then the UK and my favourite part of touring around Europe is feeling the different moods around the countries. So, ah, the UK take on music is pretty intellectual, not like the Latin countries, you know, there its like your at a football game or something, all this chanting. Every time I come here I marvel at the musical heritage of it. Like, what can you show this country that hasnt already come from this country, everything from The Beatles, The Stones to Sabbath and Zeppelin you know! This country knows a thing or two about music. My earliest influences were The Smiths and The Cure and I always look to England for music. So its very intense.
J: What kind of little girl were you?
M: You mean in like my teen years? Umm, (laughs) depressed! I guess thats why Morrissey is my friend, it felt so exciting to have Morrissey sing to me. You know, just typical confusion about you know, what is life, why am I here...music helped me figure that out.
J: How much of a realisation of a dream is this whole experience for you?
M: 1000% realisation of my dream! I literally end the album with lyrics, I had a dream, I pass it on. I dont have any religion in my life other than music and love. Theyre my only connection to the big unknown, the magical picture of the universe. You know, theres something bigger than being human, and music has guided me quite literally. This album represents my journey in music, of finding myself, finding love, finding magic and finding a reason to be on this planet; so this album represents all of it. The last song on the album I Need I Want I Will, is about a dream I had when I was nineteen years old about the power of music, that inspired me to make music my life. The last song says it all. Its the message Id like to pass on, people should believe in the magic.
J: Do you think youd have been ready to make this record at any other time of your life?
M: No. Until I decided to make the record I didnt even know if Id ever even make a record, although I was writing songs all the time, I was never sitting in the corner playing bass in other peoples band saying oh, I wish I was making my record ever! Ive always been someone who makes the best of where I am, and Ive always been very happy with those incredible opportunities I had in Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins. The (Smashing) Pumpkins made me who I am and it defined me musically, personally and emotionally.
