Javine Goes From Strength to Strength

Can you give me a resume of what it’s been like for you over the last few months? It’s been hectic, exciting, fun, stressful and at the end of the day I’m doing what I what I want to do, which is singing, writing songs and performing.  It’s been very exciting!

I read somewhere that  you have been in a musical for the last couple of years, is that true?Yeah I got the lead part when I was 18 in the Lion King. I played Nala in the Lion King which was unexpected cause I was going up for auditions cause considering I was finishing college a few months after, I thought I better start auditioning.  Then it just came about and it was a shock that I got it even though I did perform well.  It just gave me the chance to improve my craft as I was performing a song per night, for 8 shows a week over two years.  It has given me a lot of discipline.

What course were you doing before that job?Well I started ballet at three, but I was more of a dancer.  I went to a contemporary dance and ballet school. Then I was so scared to sing in front of anyone cause I would shake so I bunked all of my singing lessons.  Then I went to college and they forced me to do it and then all of a sudden I came out of myself after I got a couple of compliments. And you think yeah I can sing you know and it just snowballed from there.

So this isn’t all new to you then?
It’s new in the fact that it’s just Javine standing up there and I’m not a character and I’m not hiding behind the character.  I’m just completely exposed as me as a person with everything you know. They’re my lyrics and it’s all about me so I think that will be the only difference with it.  There’s a lot of hard work too and no sleep so I’ve been told.

In terms of songwriting, have you always been writing?
No I haven’t always been writing.  I started when I decided that I have done the whole theatre thing and I was grateful for all of that and what it had given me.  I  just wanted to do a bit more and even though I was happy I wanted to do better and better. I did my demo and as soon as I had finished that I started to go round to record companies and played my stuff to them.  I went to a couple of auditions and I got into this girl band that my current management were looking after. It was a very relaxed vibe as there was no time limits or no pressure.  It was basically write your songs and do your thing and take your time as you’re not under a time scale.

I met this called Egg White who I am working with now and he taught a lot about music and instruments and how to write properly and give it a bit of a twist. We’re still working together now so that’s great.

You have a fantastic voice but do you play any instruments?
I play the piano and I went up to Grade 5 when I was 15 which seems a long time ago but I am going to start taking lessons again so that I can brush up on my skills a bit more.
