"Blame the kids, not the artists" and Coldplay at Live 8
In a week where the French raised two fingers and rasped 'non' to the European constitution so did the British public raise two fingers and say we don't care. The actioned expletive was not regarding our involvement with European affairs but to the music charts and specifically some university London alumni by the name of Coldplay.
Now, before you all start shaking your fists in the air (like the pensioner I queue jumped this morning) I'd like to personally offer a hex to those who purchased the song (the amphibian one...). Not because Coldplay are one of the few remaining groups who believe in their music and deliver it with an eloquent angst akin to a certain Cobain of yesteryear, nor for the reason that anytime I see/hear the frog I want to extract my eyeballs just to throw at the TV BUT because the dude who came up with it is rich. Stinking rich. In excess of £10 million rich. It disgusts me that his wealth has been provided by misguided children who have either saved their pocket money or stolen it! Or are wearing hoods and tormenting tramps by offering a tumbler of gin in return for them doing a jig whilst listening to the frog. (NB none of the above has been credited)
Beverly-Hills Cop is fine, so is an irritating sound (I've just done a few to annoy my fellow workers) but the amalgam of the two plus a number one spot make-me-mad and I'm talking Bruce Banner mad, that's right.
In addition, Coldplay's new album, X&Y, has fallen foul to internet pirates. File sharers have been blamed for leaking the album pre European release and causing loses amongst Coldplay's label. (As if battling a frog wasn't hard enough, now Coldplay have to fight pirates is it me or does this sound like some role-playing game?...) ...
On a more serious note, after 20 years since Live Aid, Sir Bob has called various artists to arms to promote another concert, this time not calling for money but for action.
Sir Bob Geldof is putting his musical knowledge and status to a cause that has been overlooked and frankly ignored. "We cannot go on watching people dying on our screens daily", "Charity will never really solve problems, its' time for justice".
Strong words and I hope Sir Bob and his army of good-doers can get through to the G8 leaders and not force their hand but make them understand we need to change the way we do things. We need to save these people who are dying by the minute worldwide from things we don't even register let alone take for granted like, clean water and a dollar-a-day's worth of food.
There's a plethora of stars playing across the globe, pretty much anyone who's anyone in the music game will be using their vocal chords for a good cause. Coldplay, U2, Snoop, 50 Cent, Lauryn Hill, Jamiroquai and Madonna. The Crazy Frog is yet unconfirmed to perform.
Other news has been flowing in thick and fast akin to a river of gravy or something (I think that's enough coffee )
Tina Turner has added to Denmark's woes after the costly bicentenary celebrations of Hans Christen Andersen. The celebrations have already lost $3m and the star claimed a $1 million fee for her role in the festivities. What's love got to do with it, is a question Anker Boye, the organiser, should have pondered before signing her up and subsequently resigning over the affair. Your P45 sir
Now if I said "Shadowfax, show us the definition of haste" you'd probably say, who is this mentalist? You'd be right but these are the words of Gandalf the Grey/White or that English bloke who's popped up in Coronation Street! Lord of the Rings fans and classical fans alike, rejoice at the news the soundtrack has hit the number one spot of movie themes. Close on it's heels were of course, John Williams' Star Wars, Gladiator and Out of Africa making an appearance. There was protest as to why Spice Girls the movie didn't get a mention, one protestor removed all his clothes in protest and has been released on police bail (in time to write this article thank f***). BUT they may be reconvening for the Live 8 concert which will be both a boost but a joy to watch. Now I am complete.
Protection - we do a lot of it these days. Sun cream for our skin, sunglasses for our eyes, condoms for you know where - but do you remember to protect your hearing?
